Taxenne castle
Lordship from the beginning of the 18th century, Taxenne depended on the provostship of Gendrey, except for an area belonging to the abbey of Acey. Jean François and Ferdinand Tricalet, lawyers in the parliament of Dole, purchased the lordship of Taxenne from King Louis XIV, on August 21, 1698, as a commitment. Completed in 1722, Taxenne was a vineyard decorated with a park laid out in the French style: the composition is resolutely regular, alternating pleasure gardens: flowerbed, lime-tree mall, vast terrace; and food gardens: vegetable garden, open-air orchard, vineyards.
In the 1880s, like most vineyards in the region, Taxenne suffered from phylloxera and the vines disappeared. The park was then expanded to 7 ha by René de Girval, descendant of the Tricalet de Taxenne family. Passionate about botany, he modernized the castle gardens, having a vast English-style agricultural and landscaped park designed and planted. The designer of this park still remains unknown, but the high architectural quality of the whole, the numerous remarkable trees, still present, and the desire to preserve the gardens inherited from the Ancien Régime, seem to underline that the author of this park perfectly mastered the art of gardening.
