Montrambert Castle
The Château de Montrambert is especially remarkable for its site dominating the Ognon valley and its chapel, a rare example of the neo-Byzantine style in Franche Comté.
Montrambert is an old fortress, built on a rocky peak which overlooks the left bank of the Ognon. Property of the lords of Pesmes, Grandson, Rye,… Choiseul – la Baume, it was sold as national property during the Revolution. He was considered very strong. Captured and seriously damaged by Louis bosses. The old fortress was replaced by a pleasure house.
In 1847, Maria Lyautey, daughter of General Hubert Lyautey, married in Besançon Jean Ménans, master of Forges, administrator of the Forges de Franche-Comté. They settled in Montrambert, which Jean had bought a few years earlier from the descendants of the two Grenier brothers, generals of the empire. To build the new chapel, Maria called on Léon Charvet, an architect from Lyon, and the painter Louis Bardey for the decoration in 1884. The latter will also intervene at the Préfecture du Rhône, the Lons-le-Saunier theater. This ISMH chapel, in neo-Byzantine style, is characteristic of this period. Montrambert is still the property of the descendants of Jean and Maria Ménans. The chapel and the park are open to visitors.
