Bournel Castle

For more than five centuries, the family of the Marquis de Moustier has owned the estate. The 1st Marquis Philippe-Xavier de Moustier married Louise de Bournel in 1732, who gave her name to the estate. Around 1735, Louise de Bournel had a new castle built in Cubry, partly completed, today called Vieux Château. In the middle of the 19th century, the Marquis Léonel de Moustier commissioned a modern neo-Gothic castle from the architect Clément Parent, a student of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. His son, Pierre-René de Moustier, 6th marquis, added a chapel. He also designed the French gardens and the English park. The neo-Gothic castle and its chapel were classified as MH in 1989 and the ensemble including the outbuildings, the stables, the farm and the Orival tower was listed.

In the seven hectares of park with rare species, the French garden is spread out on the terrace flanked by watchtowers, the English-style park and the vegetable garden with ponds, espalier avenues of fruit trees, gazebos, cave ( classified), greenhouse, collections of peonies and old roses. All of these gardens have been listed as MH since 1992 and in the pre-inventory of Remarkable Gardens.
