Vregille Castle

The lordship of Vregille dates back to the 11th century. At this time a first fortified castle was mentioned, consisting of a round tower and four square towers, with the mission of protecting the passage over the Ognon river. In 1364, the Great Companies opposed Admiral Jean de Vienne on the Vregille bridge.

Louis de La Tour Saint-Quentin rebuilt a fortified house in 1570. Ancient texts speak of “a fishpond, a watchtower and a blessed oak. » The estate was sold to Baron Gaspard de Blisterswick de Moncley, then it was acquired in 1699 by Claude-Alexandre Courlet, Parliamentarian, who became Lord of Vregille. Claude-Alexandre will rebuild the lordly home according to the taste of the time, from 1713 to 1730, with a large gate, courtyard and ordered food gardens which then become French style, the projects of which are kept at the castle. They were brought up to date later, in the landscape style by Mansuit de Vregille, perhaps helped by his brother-in-law Théophile de Boulot, a recognized painter and garden designer for the Duke of Birkenfeld*, in Bavaria.

In the middle of the 19th century (1854), Auguste de Vregille inherited an important library for which he had a pavilion built adjacent to the central dwelling on the south side with symmetry on the north side, thus giving the castle its current appearance. At the same time, he also enlarged the English-style park which would then take on the appearance we know today.

The Château de Vregille, (whose current owner is the direct descendant of Claude-Alexandre), with its orangery, its park and its large cabinet of curiosities is a true typically Franche-Comté family home, well in the spirit of the houses of parliamentarians who border the banks of the Ognon. The entire estate is listed as a Historic Monument.

*The Duke of Birkenfeld seems to be William Count Palatine of Birkenfeld-Gelnhausen (1752-1837), great-grandfather of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi).
