Valleroy Castle
Excavations on the site date the first constructions back to the middle of the 13th century. It was then a Fortified House remodeled in 1426 according to a recognition of a fiefdom by Étienne de Montrost with respect to the Duke of Burgundy Philippe the Good. The 16th century marks the castle’s period of prosperity. In 1516 on the death of Philibert de Montrost, Grand Master of Artillery of Maximilian I of Austria, the lands and titles passed to his nephew Florent de Vaudrey, cadet of the Vaudrey-Saint-Phalle branch. He converted the castle into a Renaissance-style stately residence with large mullioned windows, monumental fireplaces, circulation gallery, viorbo, while retaining its defensive aspect. The decline of the castle began after the Thirty Years’ War and continued in the 18th century, it becoming an agricultural operation run by a steward. During the Revolution, the castle was sold as National Property in 1794 and bought by residents of the village.
Virtually abandoned after the First World War and, after a campaign of works in the 1960s, it was classified as a Historic Monument in July 1964 by the painter Pierre Jouffroy.Taken over in 1990 and gradually restored, the castle is increasingly open to the public: Heritage classes, group visits, parties…
