City of Rougemont

Arriving from Besançon, via departmental road 486, from Vesoul via Bonnal or Tressandans, or from Montbéliard, we always discover Rougemont with the same pleasure. Indeed, this rural village looks great with its houses built on the slopes and at the foot of two hills, Montaucivey and Les Gratteris, separated by a lock used by the Drigeon stream, a tributary of the Ognon. Its origins are very ancient since, nearby, tools from the Paleolithic era, Gallic, Roman and Burgundian remains have been found. But it was only from the early Middle Ages, with the House of Rougemont, that its history was richest.
In the 11th and 12th centuries, seven lords of Rougemont were hereditary viscounts of Besançon and in the 13th and 15th centuries, three members of the Rougemont family were archbishops of Besançon. From this period, only a few writings remain, vestiges of its fortifications, the base of one of the towers of the fortified castle (destroyed following invasions during the various conquests of Franche-Comté) and the old convent des Cordeliers at the end of the rocky spur in the Citadelle district.

Walking through its old streets, especially those leading to the Citadel, there are numerous discoveries: some remains of the ramparts and old buildings of this old castle town, numerous wine cellars testifying to its wine-growing past. In the center of the town, visitors can admire other curiosities: the ensemble formed by the Town Hall, the old grain market, the impluvium wash house and the fountain with a fluted column, dating from the first half of the 19th century, the Vorget castle which has become a retirement home, the Rougemontot fountain and some old calvaries.
